The first 'How To Train Your Dragon' was a big shocker. What might look like a generic animated film turned out to be one of the best of it's kind. It is a very moving film, and seeing the unlikely friendship between a dragon and a human was a real charmer. 'How To Train Your Dragon' follows the same formula that it's predecessor done well--only does it has a far more interesting characters, an emotionally-rich drama, and well, as you might guess it: MORE DRAGON FIGHTS!!
Set five years after the first film, we see dragons blissfully united with the vikings in the land of Berk. While Dragon races are held from time to time--Hiccup and his trusty dragon Toothless journey sail through the skies, finding unmapped islands and new worlds. In one of their expeditions, the duo are led to mysterious ice cave: in what out to be a home of wild dragons and someone in the name of 'Dragon Rider'. They also encountered dragon hunters, pirates working for Dragon Bludvist: a man using dragons for his power to seize the world.
Let me get to the point: 'How To Train Your Dragon 2' is a superior sequel. The movie transcends what the first one perfected. The action sequences were fantastic. It would make viewers glue to their seats, because this movie was full of surprises. The film's final act was (I really don't wanna use this word, but I thought it was rather a fit) AWESOME! Did I mention, this is really dragons versus dragons: it's fantastic.
If it's drama you're looking for: this film executes it with so much care. While the first one is simply a coming of age story, this sequel was rather a family tale. Valka and Stoick's story will definitely move you. It was a real eye-opener to what this animated film had done.
Visually, it's stunning. Roger Deakins consults the visual effects of the film, the aerial sequences will have your jaw-dropped. It's fascinating.
As a sequel, 'How To Train Your Dragon 2' doesn't disappoint. It soars the stakes and greatness of it's predecessor, and will leave you with awe and wonder.
The geek rates it 8.4/10.
'How To Train Your Dragon 2' is now showing in cinemas nationwide.
