In probably Disney's most mature outing in years, 'Zootopia' is a noir movie tackling discrimination, drugs and crime dressed as a kids movie.
The story is set in the fictional city of Zootopia where animals were doing what humans normally do everyday. Ginnifer Goodwin provides the voice of Judy Hopps, a bunny who came to the city to become a city cop, in which she initially never got because apparently she was too "cute" to become one. Instead, she landed a parking officer gig which led her to closely solving a case involving missing animals and a fox (Jason Bateman) who she connects with despite their differences.
The movie started off very formulaic and rather cheesy until it reaches Zootopia, where somehow it became a different movie. I love 'Zootopia' for how fun it was, and how it literally gets super serious at times. There are moments here that will make everyone double-check if it's a kids movie, because not only the mystery subplot is not-so-kid-friendly for my taste, i'm enjoying how I was involved with the risks the filmmakers are making to get this exciting for grown-ups.
It would be a lot better if this movie conclude on its first real ending (since there are basically two - one after the mystery, and another one after it). The dragging final 15 minutes deals with unsolved subplots I honestly don't mind if the movie doesn't solve it.
Powered by a talented voice cast of Idris Elba, J.K. Simmons, Alan Tudyk joining Goodwin and Bateman, 'Zootopia' is a surprisingly mature tale adults can equally enjoy as their kids. The ending doesn't finish as tact as its mystery subplot is, but still I enjoyed it all the way through.
The geek rates it 7.5/10!
'Zootopia' is now showing in cinemas nationwide (Philippines) from Walt Disney Pictures Philippines!
