It's quite surprising 'The Angry Birds Movie' is the best video game-based feature film to come out in years. This genre was starting to heat up the market especially with Warcraft: The Beginning and Assassin's Creed coming out this year, this film is a nice opener for what's to come in the next few months.
The filmmakers took out the source material to a borderline of being safe and ballsy. Directors Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly constantly throw out pop culture references, most notably the twin sisters from The Shining and Magic Mike (yes, they went that far), and adult humor that I did not expect, especially from a film directed to kids.
For a film that should be more relevant if released a few years back, it suffers from making the charm it could've made. The film also turned out to be forgettable unfortunately like its source material despite how frequent I chuckled in some scenes.
'The Angry Birds Movie' concludes in a climactic sling-shot showdown you already expect to be included there coming in. It is where most of the film's excitement comes into play, but comes off exhausting by the end.
The geek rates it 6/10!
