The biggest praise I can give to 'Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako' was how natural and realistic its portrayal of "coming out" in the homosexual community. Yes, the theme was mostly tweaked for dramatic impact but there was a tinge of rawness into it I felt thanks to Edgar Allan Guzman, who brought most of the the emotional pull in the whole thing.
Michael Pangilinan was decent with his performance as the heterosexual best friend to Guzman's secret gay lover. Same goes to Nora Aunor whose mother added layers to the reoccurring theme of gay acceptance in the movie.
But the film is not without its flaws. There were a lot of scenes that could've played stronger if not for the weak script. Almost half of the movie felt like a music video with the film characters doing their own thing, with Pangilinan song 'Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako' from which the film was inspired was unnecessarily played in its entirety.
'Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako' was effective at some parts. There were a lot of potential here given the talent of the cast involved in this project, but it unfortunately sticks to the conventional cliches the audience nor the film needed in the first place.
The geek rates it 6/10!
'Pare, Mahal Mo Raw Ako' opens this June 8 in cinemas nationwide from VIVA Films! Rated R-13 by the MTRCB.
