“Death of a Unicorn” review: Jurassic Park for unicorns

“Death of a Unicorn” taps into the lore of unicorns as seemingly harmless creatures who would easily become cold-blooded when you mess with them.

They have been secretly inhabiting our world. No one knows their existence except the mentions in ancient scriptures and myths. That is until a father and his daughter (Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega), while en route to a weekend getaway, accidentally ran over a unicorn passing by the road.

Plenty of things that are best left unspoken happened after, but what I can tell is the unicorn tribe is not happy with this and has spread havoc to the people who have wronged one of them.

The plausible aspect of “Death of a Unicorn” is that you don’t expect them to go ballsy when it comes to horror and comedy. The latter half of the film played out like an R-rated “Jurassic Park” sprinkled with the crassness of rich people satire like “Succession”. In the film, a family patriarch (Richard E. Grant) whom Paul Rudd’s character works for decides to assemble an extensive troop of scientists to examine the remains of a dead unicorn. The catch is they are not there for research purposes, but how to maximize such rare material for financial gain.

“Death of a Unicorn” works the best when it doesn’t deal with the unicorn horror blood fest. I feel it’s one of those films that would excel solely being a comedy, without the frills of other blockbuster genres. This is because the film’s entire cast was really good here, especially Will Poulter who isn’t pulling any stops with an otherworldly comedic performance.

“Death of a Unicorn” is still a fun time at the movies. Worth noting that it’s an original story too with unicorns put to good cinematic use.

“Death of a Unicorn” is now showing in New Zealand cinemas.
