“Drop” review: Date night horrors

Drop movie Meghann Fahy

In Christopher Landon’s “Drop”, Meghann Fahy plays Violet, a mother who goes on a date for the first time after years of being a widow.

When she receives a phone notification asking her to play a game, a harmless prank message that gradually turns into threats to her personal life, Violet must choose between embarking on a deadly mission and ignoring it to put her child in danger.

In these games, Violet is given several tasks. Without spoiling for the sake of suspense, she is provided with some of the most nerve-wracking activities she must overcome, all while concealing that she is playing this game from the rest of the crowd.

“Drop” is a lot of fun. The kind of fun that works best with a crowd that doesn’t strictly mind their logic in movies. Violet could’ve gone to prison with only the first of many tasks she had to endure. Remember that she is doing all of it in a public space, filled with tight cameras and a room of guests that would easily call in security in no time.

Embrace the absurdities of it all, and you will find great joy in this movie. Meghann Fahy, the breakout star of “The White Lotus”, seems to have the most fun here and would undoubtedly be a regular name for big projects in the future. She brought both a chaotic and restrained energy that would come off as goofy if not done right.

“Drop” is now showing in cinemas.
