“G20” review: Viola Davis is unstoppable as the butt-kicking president who saves the world

Apr 11, 2025

Viola Davis and Antony Starr in G20.

Viola Davis kicks, bruises, and punches a lot in “G20”, the latest political action film from director Patricia Riggen. It’s quite a trajectory for Davis’ career after impressing in the action-heavy sequences of “The Woman King” in 2022. At this point, no one’s hesitant to see if she can pull it off.

I feel there are more surprises to what she is offering in this new film (now streaming on Prime Video).

For one, she remains to have a commanding presence in the lackluster political subplot of “G20”. She stars as U.S. President Danielle Sutton, one of the attendees of the G20 economic forum raided by mercenaries seeking financial power. Sutton managed to sneak away from the criminals and began to conduct a "Die Hard"-esque mission of saving the world by eliminating each one of them up until their big boss (played by Anthony Starr of “The Boys”).

Davis managed to bring humanity to Sutton by portraying her as a vulnerable leader who’s trying to go against the odds. She knows that she had to earn Sutton’s hard-hitting combat by showing the process of finding strength instead of showing off.

“G20” has nothing more to offer than Viola Davis as the action-hero president pulling in the punches. I’m not sure if this movie correlates with the recent Presidential elections in the United States, but it’s quite a political statement to have the woman in position rescuing the entire world against capitalists.

Plot holes and narrative flaws aside, I think there’s no harm in watching it after a long day of work.

“G20” is now streaming on Prime Video.
